Didim

The town of Didim sits below the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and is the busy commercial area, with a choice of large supermarkets for all your needs as well as numerous smaller mini-markets for smaller buys and daily bread - an essential part of any Turkish meal.

Small public squares with water features, chai shops and all the character of this charming part of Turkey are found in the town, plus a regular Saturday Market offfers you the chance to test your skills at bargaining, perhaps over a cup of Turkish or apple chai (tea). Didim also offers a modern medical facility in an emergency.

Attractions locally available to make your stay even more enjoyable include:

Scuba diving
Boat trips
Sea fishing trips
Bird watching
Hill walking
Jeep safari
Horse riding
Turkish Bath
Quad bike safari

.....Plus the nightlife of restaurants, night clubs and bars open until the early hours of the morning if you have the stamina!

If you eat out, there are various restaurants and bars for quick snacks or full meals - Turkish pide (pizza) and soups are tasty and filling, and the local beer, Efes, has some dedicated supporters! You can find modern pattisseries - Turkish baklava is a ‘must try’ if you have a sweet tooth! - and lokum (Turkish delight). And of course there are kebabs to enjoy, and pilaf (rice dishes), vegetarian and fish dishes too...!

Altinkum

Didim and Altinkum together offer a wide choice of activities for the adventurous visitor, as well as being an ideal location for a quiet relaxing break or a base for exploring this area of Turkey. In Didim is the historic site of the ancient Temple of Apollo where the Oracle was famous throughout the Aegean region.

Altinkum, literally translated means ‘Golden sand’ and refers to the superb sandy beaches around the local coastline. There are many smaller sandy beaches and coves all along the coast waiting to be discovered - 56km of beach in all! Car hire is not essential though, as there is a good local taxi service as well as the local Dolmus mini bus service to all the local areas and beyond.

Despite modernisation, wherever you go in Altinkum you will be sure to find the local Turkish atmosphere and renowned hospitality. It is not necessary to speak Turkish as English is widely spoken and the residents of Didim and Altinkum offer a warm welcome to their guests.

Aegean Coast

The Aegean Coast of Turkey is well known for sunshine, good beaches and a famous tradition for hospitality.

Organised tours are available to various sites in the area including:
Bodrum (ancient Halikarnas) to view the Castle, harbour life and the ancient site of the Mausoleum of Mausolos.
Ephesus (Efes) to visit this ruined city and famous library and amphitheatre, and also the Virgin Mary's house.
Pamukkale to view the site of Hierapolis and the strange rock formations of the Cotton Castle and hot springs.

Tours are also available to Miletos and Priene for yet more historic sites, and the renowned wine producing town of Sirence is another popular trip.

If time allows and you are traveling through Istanbul, a chance to visit the Blue Mosque or the Topkapi Palace is well worth while before arriving in Didim.
