The cosmopolitan atmosphere and dynamism of Platja d'Aro have made it one of the most attractive destinations not only on the Costa Brava but also of all the Mediterranean.
Testifying to this Roman origin is the Settlement of Pla de Palol which, according to all references, was first settled around the 1st century BC and continued until the end of Roman occupation in the 6th century AD.
It would have occupied an area of 10,000 m2, an important part of which corresponded to patios and spacious areas.
The settlement exploited the natural resources of the earth, agriculture as well as wine growing and the extraction of clay for making ceramics.
The products obtained were exported by sea through the natural port of Cala Rovira.
At the turn of the 20th century the Main Beach was still completely undeveloped, without any buildings, and just a little further inland was a scattering of the first farms that were established on the plain, far from the suburb of Fanals d'Amunt, where the church of Fanals and the road leading to the Masnou Golf course are now located.
Definite tourist development took place with the change of name from Fanals d'Aro to Platja d'Aro (1962), the change of the administrative capital and the Town Hall from the historic centre of Castell d'Aro to Platja d'Aro (1962), and the first large international tourism promotional campaign Love calls in Playa de Aro (1964) which offered married couples the possibility of spending a week in the town.
Over the last few years Platja d'Aro has consolidated its commercial, tourist and entertainment offer as a result of private initiative and the public commitment to consolidating existing natural attractions, and offering new possibilities in the area of dining, sport, culture, and as a site for congresses and conventions.
More than a hundred establishments make up the extensive gastronomy offer of a town that is a must for all those who wish to enjoy the most exquisite culinary textures, aromas, and sensations.
The offer combines the possibility of tasting authentic characteristic Empordà products and cuisine, or taking a gastronomy trip around the world thanks to restaurants offering French, Italian, Dutch, Mexican, Chinese or Argentine cooking, among others.
The town of Castell – Platja d'Aro i S'Agaró, as part of its wide range of attractions, offers the possibility of practicing a multitude of sporting activities in public municipal installations (Sports and Congress Pavilion, Auditorium, Municipal Football Field...) or private installations (bowling, golf, tennis, swimming pool...).
During the year the Department of Sport and Youth organises a considerable range of activities to encourage physical and sport activity on an ongoing basis (Municipal Football School, Multi-sports Program, Beach Fun...) or special events (20 and 10 Km walks, Swimming, Beach Rugby 7x7...).
Apart from the municipal initiative a large number of sports clubs open their doors to active participation in numerous proposals of various types, making sporting activities an active choice for leisure.
S'Agaró is an upmarket resort on the Costa Brava between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Castell-Platja d'Aro in Spain.
To date, the promontory contains about 60 exclusive houses with part of the camí de ronda following S'Agaro's coastline in its entirety. The world famous five star Hostal de la Gavina dominates the view from Sant Pol beach and was popular with movie stars such as Charles Chaplin, Orson Welles, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Bogart and Bacall. Add to that Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, Peter Sellers, John Wayne, Dirk Bogarde and Sean Connery - without discounting that S'Agaro wasn't merely Hollywood-by-the-Sea - writers like Jean Cocteau rubbed shoulders with the soprano Teresa Berganza, the tenor Jose Carreras, Cole Porter and political figures like ex-prime minister Edward Heath of Britain, Raymond Barre of France, Clare Boothe Luce, King Juan Carlos, as well as the finance ministers of the European Community.
Like a canvas where nature has intended to combine with exquisite delicacy the intense green of the pine groves, the massive steadfastness of the rocks, the softness of the golden sands and the deep, dazzling blue of the sea - that is the Costa Brava.
From Blanes to Portbou, the list of things to do includes the Cap de Creus Natural Park, with the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the village of Cadaqués, the marshes of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park and the Medes Islands Marine Reserve, and unique settings such as Roses bay, the ruins of Empúries, the coves of Begur and Palafrugell, Sant Sebastià lighthouse, Cap Roig gardens, the Old Town of Tossa de Mar and the Santa Clotilde, Pinya de Rosa and Marimurtra botanical gardens, between Lloret and Blanes.
Do not forget to visit the shopping and leisure centres at Roses, L’Escala, L’Estartit, Palamós, Platja d’Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Lloret de Mar and Blanes.
Our route will lead us to discover places such as Peralada – with its castle and casino –, Figueres, with its museum devoted to the universal artist Salvador Dalí, medieval villages such as Pals, Peratallada and Púbol, the pottery shops at La Bisbal, the scenery of the Pla de l’Estany county with its capital Banyoles, and the city of Girona, with its cathedral and internationally famous Jewish Quarter.
And on top of all this, one of the features we can display with greatest pride is the quality of our beaches and coastal waters, the result of considerable work put into quality monitoring and water treatment which has over and over again been accoladed for its quality by the European Environmental Education Foundation, as seen from the many blue flags which flutter in the breeze along our coastline.
In addition, the beaches of Lloret de Mar and Fenals have obtained the “Q” certificate of tourism quality awarded by the ICTE, and the beaches of Santa Margarida, Salatar, El Rastell, La Nova, La Punta, Canyelles-Bonifaci and L'Almadrava (in Roses) and those of Sant Antoni, Cala Cristus-Ses Torretes, Torre Valentina and Es Monestri (in Calonge) have won the EMAS environmental quality certificate.
