Between Diagonal and Pl. Catalunya is most of the "Eixample" area ("expansion" in English), which arose from the famous "Pla Cerdà" (Cerdà's city plan). After 1860, and the demolition of the city walls, Barcelona began to expand. Its new district, known as the Eixample is, without doubt, a unique example of European urban planning.
Today, the Eixample is Barcelona’s main centre: a shopping and residencial area district whose streets feature a succession of prestigious shops, art galleries, restaurants and night-time bars. L' Eixample, with its square blocks of houses forming a grid pattern, has as its main boulevard the Passeig de Gràcia, where you will find the famous "Pedrera" and "Casa Batlló" by Gaudi.
All of the following are either next to or not more than minutes walks from the apartment: the Picasso Museum, the Cathedral, the Ramblas, the Gothic area, the Boqueria fresh food market, the palm-fringed marina where you can catch a cable car to the top of the Monjuic hill, the beach, the Aquarium, Imax cinema, the Ciutadella park, Mare Magnum, Port Olímpic, Textile Museum, Chocolate Museum, boat trips of the port, etc. The Bus Touristic stops just around the corner from the apartment and the nearest metro stop is 200m away if you would like to visit the Sagrada Familia and the Parque Güell which are located outside the city centre.
One of the most vibrant, cosmopolitan cities in Europe, Barcelona offers everything from sunbathing on the beach to beautiful modernist and gothic tourist sites!
Surrounded by mountains and sea, the city of Barcelona has a picturesque setting. The lovely sandy beach is safe for swimming and runs along the mediterranean sea.
As many other European regions, Barcelona has well defined seasons in which temperatures and general weather are fairly predictable. Being a coast city, the relative humidity level is very high, always around 70%.
The warmest season is between June to August, with temperatures that sometimes can go higher than 30 degrees (Celsius), perfect for a holiday close to the sea. Enjoy the beaches and pools, walk the city wearing light clothing or just relax and have a cold drink at the various terraces available in the city.
The Catalonia that I like to recommend is made up of traditional small fishing villages of Cadaqués, Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, all unspoilt by mass tourism and an absolute delight to visit. If you prefer the mountains then you might like to drive through the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees and stop off in the lovely flower-filled valleys and picturesque hill-top villages. But whether it's the sea or the mountains you like the most, Catalonia has something to offer just about everyone. If you are interested in cuisine then Catalonia is at the cutting edge of world trends with 3 of the 5 restaurants which have been awarded 3 Michelin stars in Spain located here, including 'El Bulli' voted 'Best Restaurant of the Year in 2006-08'. But you don't have to spend a lot to eat well here. The average standard of cooking is very high and very affordable. If Catalonia is the kingdom, then Barcelona has got to be the jewel in the crown with daily temperatures averaging 13ºC in winter and 28ºC in summer with guaranteed sunshine almost all year round.
