Frigiliana is an ideal day-long escape from the bustle of the coastal tourism in Malaga, Torrox, Nerja, Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga.
The village is famous for its whitewashed houses and also for its hanging baskets which are displayed throughout from village houses. The village also has some fantastic walking tracks
As you wander the steep and narrow streets you can imagine where donkeys once walked. Brighly painted houses with colourful doors adorn the narrow passages. At the top you will find an interesting, if not plain, church. Opposite is a pleasant square to rest and enjoy a traditional meal.
There are many fine restaurants hiding away and you must seek them out. Within a short distance there are 15 restaurants listed by Mitchelin. The mirador at the top has particularly impressive views while you eat.
You will find ample tiny shops in which to buy the local handicrafts which include fine basketware, linen and lace as well as beautiful ceramic wares but you will not find supermarkets and large stores.
Approximately 6 km inland from Nerja lies Frigiliana, one of the most beautiful villages of Spain. Shadowed by the former Arab Fortress, the village of Frigiliana (2.200 inhabitants) is situated on the southern slopes of the Almijara-Tejeda Mountain range. It has spectacular views of the Higueron River which lies in the Chillar Valley.
The village lies in the area known as Axarquía - east of Málaga - and extends over 42 square kilometers. It borders Cómpeta in the north/west, Torrox in the west and Nerja in the south/east.
It has a sub-tropical climate which has attracted population since pre-history. The Romans built a fort here but unfortunately it no longer remains. The history of the village is pictured in 12 mosaics in the old quarter, created by Pilar Garcia Millan.
