ALMERIMAR AND SURROUNDINGS
Almerimar is not just port, it is an oasis arisen from a barren zone, incomparable and wild beauty. Almerimar has been designed with tourists in mind and integrates with the natural surroundings.
Immersed in the heart of the Costa Almeria - in the district of the Ejido, approximately 30 kms from the capital Almeria. It is surrounded by a plastic sea of greenhouses which supply Europe with some of its finest horticulture.

The marina area is the focus for all the local shops and the supermarket. There are also banks, car rental shops and a good sprinkling of other retail therapy opportunities. There is also a wide variety of restaurants to suit your mood from good value tasty Spanish cuisine through seafood, Chinese, Italian to gourmet food served in great surroundings overlooking the water.
The residential complex is surrounded by a secure private area with Swimming pools set within beautiful landscaped gardens. Located adjacent to the Marina in Almerimar (the second largest in Spain) and at only stones throw from the beach there are excellent facilities on your doorstep with many restaurants, bars & shops surrounding the port.
Almerimar is 35 mins drive from Almeria airport, along the Mediterranean coast motorway. The province of Almería is the only province in Spain where amazing beaches are shadowed by the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Europe’s most southerly ski resort, which can be reached in only 2 hours.
Almerimar infrastructure is all in place and the amenities include a supermarket, private schools, doctors surgery, beaches, cafés, restaurants and of course an array of tapas bars. In addition Almerimar boasts a 1100 berth marina, enjoying a coffee (or something stronger) whilst watching the sun go down over the Harbour is a sight you never grow tired of.
Locally (only 7mins by car) there is a ‘Centro Commercial’ with a hypermarket, multi-screen cinema, children’s play area and more restaurants. This is in fact located opposite the main hospital with all modern facilities.
Generally the town attracts a fairly affluent visitor. The town has a lovely mix between many nationalities from most European Countries with the local Spanish having the greatest influence. There is a real feeling of community and with little or no segregation, mingling with the locals is automatic.
Future plans for Almerimar include the refurbishment of the 18 Hole Golf Course in the centre of town, two 5 Star Hotels plus 2 further luxury hotels to add to the existing **** Meliá which has recently opened. One of the new centrally located developments adjacent to the Marina is to include a commercial area of some 6000m2 which will include a variety of modern shops.
Future developments are also impressive which involve careful future planning to ensure the existing natural beauty is not lost and residential areas not overcrowded. Areas or zones have been allocated certain characteristics and specific restrictions by the Mayors office to guarantee future capital growth for the area. Due west of Almerimar is an area zoned for development which will acquire the name “Ensenada de San Miguel”, this will adjoin the new Almerimar Lago location. Further infrastructure will increase as planned with even an Olympic sized rowing canal plus two further 18 hole golf courses along the coast.
Golf in Almerimar
Almerimar has an excellent, newly extended, 27-hole golf course designed by Gary Player in 1976. The Clubhouse is friendly and the attractive restaurant provides excellent food for hungry golfers. Clubs, trolleys and buggies are available for hire. Our apartment is just across the road from the club house! It couldn’t be closer! 30 minutes by road to the east towards Almeria are two more excellent courses, La Serena at Roquetas and La Envia just 10 minutes north of Roquetas in the mountains. An hour to the east is the new and highly rated Valle d’Este golf course and another 15 minutes east brings you to the legendary Desert Springs course - Almerimar is a golfer’s paradise!
Skiing in Almerimar
The apartment is just 2 hours away from the great “Sky Station” ski village resort near Granada in the Sierra Nevada range reached through breath-taking scenery on top class mountain motorways. The Ski resort has ski-runs going up to 3,300 meters altitude and a very attractive ski village with ample high quality accommodation at reasonable prices if you fancy staying over for a couple of nights. In the Winter and Spring, one-day skiing excursions are quite practical and excellent fun – leave the apartment at 9 a.m. arrive at 11 a.m. - hire your skis - have an early lunch and be on the slopes with your half-day pass soon after noon. Ski until 5 p.m. if you’re keen, have a nice relaxing apres-ski tea or something stronger and be back in Almerimar by 8 p.m. A nice warm shower – dress and be out before 9 p.m. for dinner in one of the best restaurants overlooking the marina for less per head than a Friday night pub meal in the UK.
Travel in Almerimar
Malaga Monarch is about 200 Km to the west and the journey to the airport by car currently takes around 2.5 hours. Almeria Airport is 45 minutes to the east and is now served by Monarch, My Travel, Easy Jet and Ryan air. The Ancient City of Almeria is about 35 minutes away. Murcia Fly Globespan is 3 hours to the east. For a real adventure you can reach Almerimar from the ferry at Santander in the north in around 12 hours with breaks. Alternatively, make this drive really relaxing and get to know the real Spain.

Almerimar has a wide range of activities such as
• Sailing: Due to the excellent climate, sailing can be practiced all year round. There is a sailing school, where all necessary equipment is provided, for all for those new to the sport, or those wishing to develop their sailing skills.
• Beaches: Miles of BLUE FLAG beaches stretch east and west of the marina. It slopes gently into the sea. The beaches are well cared for, cleaned every day, and lifeguards are on duty during the high season. There are ample fresh water showers and toilets.
• Many sports are available on the beaches including windsurfing, kite-surfing, hang-gliding, beach volleyball, football, pedal boats and jet skis. It is also well equipped with beach bars.
• Wind-Surfing: Although wind-surfing and kite-surfing are fairly new sports in Almerimar, they are gaining in popularity and expert teachers are on hand when needed.
• Scuba Diving: The coasts around Almerimar have crystalline waters and underwater scenery of special beauty. This makes Almerimar an ideal place to exercise scuba diving. A PADI diving school is available for those who may wish to learn this sport.
• Horse riding: Two horse-riding stables are available in Almerimar; both offer cross-country and beach rides. Instruction is available for those just beginning.
• During the high season there are many sporting events organized by the local council including football and beach volleyball tournaments and a pentathlon.
• Angling: The variety of fish caught locally is quite extensive and many an angler has a boat moored in the marina. People also fish from the beaches and breakwaters as well as the harbour walls. There is also a flourishing local fishing trade and significant quantities of tuna are caught every day in season.
• Bird Watching: The natural park of Punta Entinas, an expanse of salt marshland, is famous for the flamingos, ducks, and gulls that inhabit this area.
• Mountain Biking/Walking: The famous Alpujarras mountain range begins by Berja, less than a half-hour's drive away from Almerimar.
• Skiing/Snowboarding: The snows of the Sierra Nevada, one of the best ski resorts in Europe are only a two hour drive from Almerimar.
The province of Almeria, situated in the south east of the Spanish peninsula, is bordered with the provinces of Granada and Murcia. It covers 8774 square kilometers with a population of 425,000 inhabitants, 145,000 of which live in the capital city, Almeria.
