Furnishing your holiday home

Many buyers forget about the cost of buying furniture and do not even consider the local laws regarding furniture, electrical items, fire safety and gas appliance safety. In your own country these areas have strict regulation and it is probably the same in the region you intend to buy. Owners need to know what the exact situation is regarding local regulations to avoid disastrous mistakes.

So where and what to buy. Obviously budget and personal taste play an important part, but we had to be realistic and have decided look for simple designs.

Furnishing an outdoor space can be just as important as furnishing an indoor room. In fact, the two can be very similar where furniture and effect are concerned. That is why it is essential to choose the right décor to fit the surroundings.

Whether your holiday home is in a climate that is relatively warm year-round, or is only able to enjoy the warmer weather a few seasons out of the year, you want the holidaymakers to enjoy your patio. No matter how large a space it is, you want to be sure it is comfortably furnished. That is why it is important to choose patio furniture that will help set the mood and match the space.

A table and chairs is one of the most popular furniture sets placed on a patio or deck. If you do not want just a plane picnic table, consider purchasing one made of glass and/or metal with matching chairs. Adding an umbrella and cushions to the chairs can really dress up the area, and make it a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the sunset or simply spend a lazy afternoon.

A hammock is another great addition to your patio or yard. Many people love relaxing in one that is either stretched between two larger trees, or that stands alone. It is often better to place it in a shaded area, since napping in a particularly sunny location could become a bit uncomfortable, but either way you go, it is sure to be a favorite among guests.

Lounge chairs are also provide another great way to relax. Once you have eaten a big meal, you can retire to the patio where you will be able to relax in comfort, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. Lounge chairs are also a great way to spend a long afternoon.

End tables are another great choice. They not only look great when placed strategically around the yard or patio, but also provide a place for guests to put drinks, insuring that their glasses or bottles will never have to rest on the ground. Place them by your lunge or lawn chairs for added convenience.

When you are shopping for patio furniture, what you do not see right away is just as important as what you do see. At first glance, the color or style might appeal to you, but it's a good idea to "kick the tires" before making a decision.

Check out the structural soundness of the table and chair legs. Are they solidly constructed? If they are metal, are they sturdy, and generously soldered? Some furniture is made of hollow metals which can bend under pressure. When you sit on the chairs, do you feel secure that the chair will hold your weight? Both lightweight and heavyweight furniture have their advantages. Lightweight furniture is easier to arrange, but it can also be easily blown over in bad weather. Conversely, heavyweight furniture stays where you put it.

Tables, too, come in many shapes, sizes and materials. Tempered glass, marble and stone might withstand the elements better than other materials, but they are among the heavier choices. It is important that any base or legs can support the weight of not just the tabletop, but anything put on it as well. A top-heavy table is more likely to topple over and cause injury than a table with an equally heavy base.

If an umbrella is part of your patio ensemble, make certain the shaft is solid, or at least flexible. If it is made of lightweight, hollow material, it can snap under pressure, causing damage to the table or injury to persons seated at the table.

In indoor furnishing, when it comes to optimizing space there are basically two things you need to consider: when space is limited you need to resort to light furniture. For example, instead of a solid wood table, you can use one with a light metal base and a glass on top. The use you can give to it is exactly the same and visually it provides a lot more space because you can see through the glass.

There is no need to purchase those expensive couches with computerized movements directed with a remote control. Of course they provide a lot of relaxation but there are ways to obtain similar results with some alternatives that are both cheaper and less space consuming. For example, a rocking chair can be very relaxing, both the movement and the soft sound can help your renters rest after they finished eating. It’s much better than going straight to bed.

A divan instead of a couch for watching TV is another great idea; it’s like having a bed on the living room only it’s much more stylish. Imagine, having a divan just like therapist have to help patients relax and think. These special long seats are perfect to provide comfort while being decorative at the same time. And due to their shape, they can be accommodated in almost any kind of living room.

The other thing that you need to consider is taking advantage of space using furniture with drawers. For example, if you need to choose a table for the TV and DVD or other appliances, try to find a table with drawers where you can store things that would otherwise take space visually. Keep decorations to a minimum on small rooms as it will provide a sense of amplitude.

A bedroom’s space is often divided between two people. Therefore, it's worth considering the allocation of storage furniture to each person - it can help bring order and organisation to a bedroom’s living space. Wardrobes and cupboards are a popular means of storage and can often bring character and charm.

Wardrobes with sliding doors are a more space-effective alternative to hinged versions and are available in a variety of designs. It is worth paying a bit extra if you want the sliding-door feature as budget versions often suffer from sticking runners. Chests of drawers provide a further storage option and come in the form of tall-boys and standard three-door varieties. If you don’t have enough hanging space for cloths then this type of furniture can offer an effective solution to clothes storage.

As well as a place of rest, the bedroom provides an escape from stress and worry. It’s the most private room in the house and, unlike other areas of a holiday home, belongs exclusively to the individual or couple who sleep there. With the right furnishings and planning, it can become an idyllic refuge that offers a great deal of comfort and relaxation.

The choice of bed is of course a main consideration when decorating a bedroom. The best solution is to purchase a divan and mattress together, considering that both are designed to work with each other. The big furniture retailers sell them individually or in sets.

Brass beds can prove a very attractive centre-piece and are relatively inexpensive nowadays. They offer a more traditional ambience and are suited to most styles of bedding, due to their practical design. The same is true of four-poster beds. These can provide added privacy as well as enhancing the look and feel of a bedroom. However, they are more suited to larger, high-ceiling bedrooms so careful consideration is advised if you’re thinking about buying one.

The placement of a bed is often influenced by space. The standard practice is to place it in the centre of the room, with the headboard pushed against a wall. Although this method can save space, if your bedroom is spacious it might be worth considering other layouts. The positioning of a bed might enable you to include other furniture pieces such as a desk or table. It can also provide more storage space.

Conversely, you may choose to furnish your holiday home with country style furnishings. Yet, country style décor is also broken down into sub-themes and you will need to choose the style of furnishings you want to suit your tastes. French, Swedish, American, English and Southwest Country furnishings are all choices - again, depending on your individual tastes and preferences.

You can make your home look quite different by changing your soft furnishings. A new rug on a hardwood or laminate floor brightens a room enormously. One way of going about home furnishing and decorating on a small budget is to start with your soft furnishings. Buy some new cushions with two-tone or multi-colored covers then pick out one of the colors and use that as a theme for your decorating. If there is a nice blue color in the cushions then get some blue curtains. Paint the living room a neutral color and have a blue feature wall, or whatever color it is that you have chosen. You’ll be surprised at the new slant that this puts on the existing furnishings and how easy it is to coordinate the rest of the room with the soft furnishings.

Alternatively, you can purchase Victorian furnishings and decorate the room in a complete Victorian theme. You can furnish your holiday home in earthy tones to bring back the charm of the Victorian era. Shop at antique stores and find some Victorian lamps, rugs, chairs, couches, shelving, roll top desks and more. If you use your imagination there is no end to what you can do with a Victorian themed room. Don't forget to place various pieces of Victorian artwork on the walls to complete your holiday home décor.
