The cast-off point on the Tiber is at Ponte Felcino (easily reached from the dual carriageway S:S 3/Bis Terni-Cesena) where there are public gardens and a teaching wood with numerous plants including not only indigenous flora such as poplars, willows and alders but also species originally from other habitats which have now naturalized in the Tiber environment: the hornbeam, the holm-oak, the maple, the locust-tree and the ailanto.
The banks of the river are covered by the dense vegetation of trees and bushes and sometimes branches trail out into the waters of the river. Because of this it is a good idea to keep at a safe distance from the banks during your trip.Once the first bridge is passed, a lovely pine grove shows glimpses of the surrounding countryside with its crops of tobacco, cereals and sunflowers. After negotiating a set of rapids (categorized grade II) in the vicinity of Pretola you will see your first example of a tower flanked by a lock, part of the medieval fortifications composed of a tower, a lock and a mill. These bear witness to the ancient splendors of the Tiber, when the river played a primary role in the economy of the Tiber valley - which was why it was garrisoned by lookout towers - and its waters were used to grind corn.
After continuing on down the river, and passing the bridge near Ponte Valleceppi, the canoe has to be taken out of the water on the left bank to pass a weir.

This is a circular tour of the lake, most of which is on unsurfaced but good roads. The total distance is 116 kilometres divided into three stages, with Castiglione del Lago as the point of departure and return, and with stops at Castel Rigone and Panicale.
STAGE 1From Castiglione del Lago to the Poggio del Belveduto farm.Distance: 47.9 kilometres.Difference in level: 700 metres. This first stage starts from the railway station at Castiglione del Lago and takes unsurfaced roads interspersed with short stretches of tarmac. After the first 11 kilometres completely on the level the road begins to rise until it reaches 612 metres above sea level at the Gosparini pass, from which there are magnificent views of Lake Trasimene.A ride of a few kilometres on the ridge of the hills north of the lake takes you to the farm of Poggio del Belveduto.
STAGE 2From Poggio del Belveduto to Panicale.Distance: 38 Km.Difference in Level: 650 metres. From the farm of Poggio del Belveduto the road descends to an ancient lookout tower. The route then passes through hilly countryside as far as the nature reserve della Valle, then for a long stretch follows the shores of the lake.Leaving the lake behind, the route takes a series of narrow unsurfaced roads with shorts stretches of tarmac and takes you up into the foothills of Panicale.
STAGE 3From Panicale to Castiglione del Lago.Distance: 30 Km.Difference in Level: 600 metres. The third stage starting at Panicale is another easy ride with long stretches through the hills but with no steep inclines. The first part is on long stretches of tarmac, but there is little traffic, passing through the green of a countryside dotted with woods and pine groves, as far as the Lago di Chiusi, where for a short distance the road follows the shores of this small lake. After numerous ups and downs on roads that are mainly unsurfaced in the second part of this stretch Castiglione del Lago comes into sight once more, after a ride of 116 km. through the green countryside of Umbria.
