Ossuccio

Ossuccio is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy. It is located on the western shore of Lake Como some 20 km northeast of Como. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 975 and an area of 8.0 km²

It is known for the Sacro Monte, a site of pilgrimage and worship close to it, for the late 16th century Villa del Balbiano, the mid-20th century Villa Leoni, and for the island of Comacina which falls within its territory.

Ossuccio borders the following municipalities: Colonno, Lenno, Lezzeno, Tremezzo, Porlezza, Sala Comacina.

Lake Como Area

Lake Como is 50 km long and west of Menaggio is where the lake splits in two. The mountains around the lake are 2000 m high and the lake up to 1350 feet deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

Traveling further North up the lake is Como’s only island, Isola Comacina. The best day of the year to visit this island is the week end after June 24th, when St. John's Day is celebrated. There is a mass in the ruins of the S. Eufemia basilica, followed by a procession and evening fireworks. You will need to take the ferry!
There are enough lakeside towns and villages to explore for many weeks, but some are perennial favourites; Tremezzo is an example with a classic lakeside promenade plus some lovely old villas and lakeside hotels. From here you can take a car ferry over to Bellagio, “the pearl of the lake” and Varenna, with its steep winding alleys on the opposite shore.

Lombardy

Lombardy is one of the 20 regions of Italy. The capital is Milan. One-sixth of Italy's population lives in Lombardy and about one fourth of Italy's GDP is produced in this region. The languages are Italian, Western Lombard and Eastern Lombard. The primary religion is Catholic, of Ambrosian rite or Roman rite.
