Olivola

The Lunigiana is a territory in the farthest northwestern corner of Tuscany bordering with the southern end of the Liguria region, surrounded by the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine mountains on one side and the Ligurian Sea on the other.
The area covers part of the Massa Carrara province, as well as a few towns on the Ligurian Riviera.
During the Middle Ages, the Lunigiana land was divided into many local feudal domains, giving rise to numerous castles and enchanting medieval villages that can still be admired today.
The area also offers numerous Romanesque parishes and churches that also served as resting stops to the many pilgrims that travelled along the Via Francigena, the religious and mercantile road that communicated northern Europe to Rome crossing through the Lunigiana.
Here the presence of the man goes back to the prehistoric period, as given evidence by the discovery of the Statues Stele of the Bronze-Age, today kept in the local museums.

Massa Carrara

CARRARA

In the Apuan Alps, the spectacular marble quarries offer an evocative sight. This precious white stone has been quarried since Roman times. Since then, it has been used for all sorts of different purposes - from simple objects to more famous works of art and architecture. In the art studios of Carrara, at the Marble Museum and Open Air Exhibition, it is possible to learn about the history and working of marble.

Tuscany

Some of the well-known places of interest
However there are numerous smaller fascinating towns and villages where weekly markets and summer festivals abound. Many of our guests have visited Florence from our Tuscany holiday apartment and this is perfectly possible, although a long day.

PISA
Undoubtedly the leaning tower is its attraction, however there are elegant 16th century buildings along the banks of the river Arno. During June there is a special event named San Ranieri, an old contest held on the Arno with decorated boats covering the river followed by a costumed procession.

Lucca
Many tourists pass by Lucca on their way to Florence and find a true Tuscan gem. Lucca had been the capital of Tuscany and defended itself for over 400 years until Florence eventually won the title. A wealthy city formed from banking and the silk trade which today has made underwear an important industry. It is also fast becoming famous for olive oil and wine. Enclosed by its walls, the city reveals itself a little at a time. Only by walking the narrow streets of the historic centre can you discover the mystery and magic of a past rich in history, culture and architecture. Its ring of walls encloses dozens of tiny Romanesque churches, quiet paved streets, defensive towers, numerous museums and monuments. The city centre is closed to traffic, so the local people and tourists choose bicycles as a mode of transport, however the city is also a wonderful place to explore on foot. Medieval buildings line the peaceful streets, opening to reveal churches, tiny piazzas and many other reminders of the city’s long history.
