Colognora
Colognora is a magnificently preserved village, rather off the beaten tracks: ideal for people looking for peace and rest.
Its name derives from coloniola, which is small colony. The village is surrounded by forests of chestnut trees, with houses in stone that date back to the XVI century.
The village entertains a beautiful museum, the Museum of the chestnut tree, showing a collection of tools and objects related to the use of this precious fruit, the chestnut, for the economy of the valley.
This village, remained practically unchanged in the centuries, and appears an anachronism to today's eyes.
It was a strengthened suburb and still many lines of the old boundaries are visible: the roads are all made of pebbles and the buildings still denote the old elegance that once characterized them: arcs, lintels, doors and windows with frames in sandstone
Lucca is a splendid town in the heart of Tuscany, one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and in the whole of Europe. Due to its favourable geographical position, you can reach the most famous tourist sites in a very short time. This strategic position also makes Lucca one of the most sought after national and international touristic destination, the ideal place for all types of vacation, and the optimal destination for cultural voyages in search of Italian art.
Some monuments: the sixteenth century walls which with their length of 4.200 metres, completely surround the centre of town. This majestic construction took over a century to complete, and still draws the admiration of tourists. Its memorable promenade is something unequal and unrepeatable. Another wonderful artistic construction is the XIV century Guinigi's Tower with its olm-oak tree on top. We also like to mention the XV century Cathedral of San Martino with its particular facade. Among the numerous works of art inside the church, it is worth mentioning the Ilaria Del Carretto's sarcophagus, sculptured by Jacopo Della Quercia in the 1408. And finally the San Michele church which was built on the homonymous and beautiful square, as always considered the centre of town.
Tuscany extends from the Apennine chain to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and includes the island of Elba with its popular bathing resorts. -Cities such as Florence, -Lucca, Sienna, Pisa are a must to visit for lovers of art.
The famous -Chianti vineyards can also be found in this beautiful rolling countryside.
