Marina di Gioiosa Jonica

Marina di Gioiosa Jonica is located in Calabria, at 70 km Southwest of Catanzaro. This town history dates back from the Roman, Magno Greco era. It features the remains of a roman amphitheatre and an Angevin type Tower.

The town of Gerace is approximately a 20 minute drive from ALEDAHOME and has impressive cobblestone streets in addition to a 17th century church. It’s Byzantine and medieval architecture has remained unaltered. Rich of monument, churches and buildings of ancient noble, in which the cathedral, the church of San Francesco with its beautiful marble, the church of Santa Anna, the remains of the Norman castle and ancient walls. It is not only famous for the ambiance but rather the unique style of ice cream called “granite” which everyone should experience!

The attractions go on; within a 40 minute drive you can also visit the beautiful seaside resort of Tropea. Marina di Gioiosa comes alive with the festival of “the Madonna Del Carmine”. It is held annually on the 3rd Sunday of August. It is a captivating day and a not to be missed! It commencies in the morning taking the Madonna out of the church, procession, and a procession at sea, with boats to follow, parachutes come down from airoplanes and the night comes to a climax with the best firework display you have ever seen!

On august another famous festival is held. This one is called “festa di San Rocco". It is a feast of dancing all day! The night is enjoyable for rides and mercato (flea market). The mercato is held in our town every Wednesdays where you will find everything from food, to clothes, shoes and household items. The nightly “lungo mare” holds rides for the kids, eateries and cafes/pubs. Rocella is the next town which holds a very good jazz festival (Rumori mediterranei – Roccella jazz festival)

Naturally there are also some nice national parks e.g. Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte Still today live many rare and from the extinction threatened animal species and botanical species here. Its to 20 minutes from Marina di Gioiosa (near the sea and the mountain!)

Calabria

Calabria, the sunny boot point of Italy, has to offer more than the classical bath vacation with its intact nature, weird precipitous coasts, picturesque bays with dreamlike sand beaches, pretty coast towns, its varied hinterland and the stone legacies of a millennium old history of civilisation. Spared still to a great extent from the mass tourism, this region offers, uniting mountains and sea, smelling forests and lonely landscapes, which invite walking-tours. Often you bump into the tracks of the rich past of Calabria. Greeks, Romans and Normans left their characteristic buildings in the different epochs. Thus one finds numerous relicts more or less well-received, like Greek temples, statues of the Romans, Christian monasteries as well as cathedrals from the Normans.
