Orto botanico di Palermo (Botanical Garden)

distance to property: 70 km

With 10 hectares of lush gardens, the Palermo Botanical Garden is the biggest in Italy and something of an oasis in the city. The gardens origins date back to 1775, when a centre for botanical studies was established here. Today, the garden houses one of the most impressive displays of tropical plants in the Mediterranean region. There is a fantastic display of native and foreign species as well as some interesting architecture in the administrative buildings

Giardino di Piazza Marina e Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri

distance to property: 70 km

One of the most fascinating areas in this quarter is Piazza Marina, at the centre of which is Villa Garibaldi, a public garden laid out between 1861 and 1864 by Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile. Encircled by a fine cast-iron railing manufactured by a Palermo foundry, the Fonderia Oretea, the garden contains a magnificent specimen of Ficus Magnolioides, one of the largest in Italy. The square is surrounded by a series of imposing buildings, including the majestic Palazzo Chiaramonte, also known as the Steri (from the Latin Hosterium Magnum), built in 1306 by one of the most prominent Sicilian families and extended and redesigned over the centuries, becoming in turn a royal residence, the palace of the Viceroys, the seat of the Inquisition, and a law court; now it is the ceremonial seat of Palermo University. There is a splendid medieval wooden ceiling.

Santa Teresa alla Kalsa, Oratorio dei Bianchi, Lo Spasimo, La Magione

distance to property: 70 km

The Chiesa di Santa Teresa stands in Piazza Kalsa, a church with a stately façade recalling Roman baroque style built by Giacomo Amato at the beginning of the 18th century. As we approach the building known as lo Spasimo, we see the late 17th-century Oratorio della Compagnia dei Bianchi, which according to tradition stands on the spot where originally there was one of the city’s Arab gates, the one that Roger Guiscard passed through in 1072.
Now we come to the massive construction of Santa Maria dello Spasimo. Founded in 1509 in late Gothic style by the Olivetan Fathers, this church was never completed. Over the centuries it has been variously used as a fortified bastion, storehouse, public theatre, and lazaretto; in 1520 Raphael’s painting Lo Spasimo di Sicilia was housed here before it was taken to the Prado Museum; and in the mid-19th century, with a few additions, it became a charitable institution and a hospital. After many long years of use as a depot for war debris, it was restored in 1995 and transformed into the strikingly romantic shell of a building that we see today. Not far off, near the wide-open space of Piazza Magione, a square bombed flat in World War II, is the Norman Chiesa della Santissima Trinità, usually known as la Magione, a church presenting a mixture of Arab and Northern styles. It contains various 16th-century works of art and stands adjacent to the beautiful cloister of an old Cistercian monastery. Also in the vicinity, in Via Castrofilippo, is the Teatro Garibaldi (1861), inaugurated by the national Italian hero himself - the theatre subsequently fell into neglect but has now been restored.

La Cattedrale

The Cathedral of Palermo should be visited in any case; the different architectural styles give the building a unique style and a special flair, though experts in architecture maybe look at this building less enthusiastically. The Arabian touch of the decorations give a strange beauty to the building and also the interior of Palermo’s cathedral has a lot to offer

Palazzo dei Normanni e Cappella Palatina

The Norman Palace in Palermo was already built up in the 9th century AD and then was extended later on by the Normans; inside you can find Palermo’s biggest treasure: the Capella Palatina, a chapel of extraordinary beauty, a testimony of the unique Arabian-Norman style, decorated by Byzantine mosaics. At the first sight, it seems there are pictures, but when taking a second look you find out the plastic representations are put together from little mosaic stones. Just to see this chapel makes is worth to come here. But the palace still has more to offer, in the ground floor old walls from Phoenician and Greek time are exhibited and the royal bedrooms are definitely worth a visit.

The busy crossing of the Via Maqueda and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele is also called Quatro Canti (translated this means “four corners”). It is the centre of the old town and therefore the ideal starting point for discovering Palermo’s various sights. In each corner of the place you can find a swung baroque facing; the Quatro Canti were set up by the Spanish Guilio Lasso in the year 1608. At this point, the four quarters of Palermo meet: “Capo” in the west with its cathedral, in the north “Vucciria” with its market and the access to the old harbour, La Cala.
