Mulranny

Mulranny, Mulrany, Maoil Raithne or Malla Raithne(Hill of the Ferns), is an idyllic seaside village located on the isthmus between Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay in County Mayo. It has a fine sandy beach and good sporting facilities including a 9 hole golf course. Mulranny is the home of colourful giant fuchsias and exotic plants. This natural profusion of colour and plant life is celebrated each summer during the Mulranny Mediterranean Heather Festival .

Long sandy blue flag beaches and a mild climate ensure that Mulranny is a favourite location for families. The Corraun Peninsula, which contains three mountain peaks provides incredible views. Shore fishing is a must for angling enthusiasts and visitors are invited to relax in a pleasant and friendly ambience in local pubs in the evenings.

The four star Park Inn (formerly Mulranny) hotel is a magnificent Victorian building which towers above the village and offers spectacular views across Clew Bay towards the Mountain of Croagh Patrick. It has excellent leisure facilities and has a 9 hole golf links course within five minutes drive of the hotel. Among the hotels many famous guests are John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Mulranny has also been a second home to Sir Ernest Chain, the man accredited with developing the application of penicillin, and was awarded the Nobel prize for Medicine along with Alexander Fleming in 1945. Another famous home owner has been Desmond Llewelyn, better known for his role as "Q" in the James Bond movies.
