Belmullet

The town of Belmullet - in gaelic 'Béal an Mhuirthead' / 'Béal an Mhuirthid' or 'Béal an Mhuirhead' - is the centre for shopping and recreation for the hinterland population of Erris (approx 12,000 people). It is well served with a variety of shops, restaurants, pubs, banks, bakery, estate agents, 2 hotels, cafés, hairdressers and more.

Béal an Mhuirthead is a town with a population of around 2000 lying on The Mullet Peninsula in the barony of Erris, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland.

Although officially part of the Mayo Gaeltacht, it is both an English- and Irish speaking town. The area plays host in summer months to large amounts of students enrolled in local Irish language summer schools.

Béal an Mhuirthead town is the gateway to the Mullet Peninsula - an area of North Mayo rich in folklore, tradition, history and culture. Béal an Mhuirthead is a thriving town with many new developments and amenities. It is also known for its fishing lakes, rivers and sea-angling off Broadhaven Bay, and is a popular and picturesque holiday destination, particularly in mid-August when it has its annual "Lá an Logha"(Fair Day) to welcome its many emigrants and visitors. There are plenty of beaches nearby. The area is also developing a reputation among experienced surfers as a great surfing spot, as well as being a haven for learner surfers, windsurfers and sailors.

It is unusual in having two major bays in Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay heading up at each end of the main street and connected by a canal running through the town. The town serves the commercial and administration functions of the Erris region and is the centre for shopping and recreation for a hinterland population of some 12,000 people. It is well served with shops, banks, bakery, cafes, hotel and guest houses, hospital, garages, a dance-hall, community centre, airstrip, hairdressers, swimming pool and twenty public houses.
