The 5th district is the „Capital of the Capital”, the centre of business, tourism and transport. Most of the government offices, the Parliament Building, a number of universities and secondary schools with nation-wide reputations are all seated here. It is the meeting point of three metro lines and several bus and tram services. Four Danube bridges link Downtown Pest to Buda and an International Port connects Budapest to several European cities. The Chain Bridge, Vigadó and the Gresham Palace, Váci utca, the Basilica and the Parliament Building are among the most popular tourist destinations. This area accommodates most five-star hotels. However, the district is not only a tourist attraction but is also the centre for business.
Buda
Older and quieter Buda is the more picturesque part of the city with steep hills and the old Royal Palace towering over the city.
Castle District is the cities leading tourist attraction. There are the obvious landmarks such as the formal Royal Palace, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion, you will also find many other museums and things to see including the National Gallery, Budapest History Museum, Military History Museum and the amazing network of underground Caves and Labyrinths.
On the top of the 230 metre Gellért Hill stands the Citadella with the imposing Liberty Statue. This area contains many restaurants and bars and an exhibition charting its colourful history. From the view points that lookout across the entire city you are treated to the breathtaking and romantic views Budapest can offer, especially when the city turns from day to evening. On the south side of the hill stands the Cave Church still run by monks.
Pest
In contrast to Buda, Pest is flat, busy and very much the heartbeat of the city. Due to the speed of its rapid expansion Pest has always been an exciting place to be.
Rising above the city landscape is the dome of the magnificent St. Stephen’s Basilica which is home to the mummified Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen. A few blocks away is the Parliament, at the time of its completion in 1902 it was the largest Parliament building in the world and holds a promenant place in the city on the bank of the Danube.
As with many great cities Budapest has its own grand Boulevard. Andrássy út is 2.5 km long, on which stands the world famous Opera House. At the end of this beautiful tree lined avenue appears Heroes’ Square a monument to the founding fathers of Hungary. Behind this square is the City Park which gives home to the Zoo, Amusement Park, the beautiful Széchenyi bath and the world famous Gundel Restaurant.
The completion of the Chain Bridge in 1849 was the first permanent crossing of the river Danube which subsequently led to the joining of Buda, Óbuda and Pest to become one city in 1872. Few sights in Europe are as spectacular as the panoramic view of Budapest split by the river Danube.
Hungary is a country where you can see a real winter, spring, summer and autumn. During the long Winter months temperatures are on avarage between -4˚C to 4˚C, although they can reach as low as - 20˚C. The air is very dry in Hungary which helps makes the winters more bareable. The snow will fall several times each winter and gives a new lights to the city. The much awaited Spring arrives with a rise in the temperature and a chance to get rid of our winter clothes. April is the unpredictable month full of rainshowers and the occasional heatwave, May is one of the most beautiful month to visit the city with nice sunny days, good temperatures and fresh green colours from the many trees in abandance. Summer can be hot with temperatures reaching 40˚C. The locals leave Budapest for the Balaton and their weekend homes for much of the summer leaving the city to the tourists. This gives Budapest a strange but lovely atmoshpere at the weekends with a city that is so quiet and empty. As with many places to visit Autumn in Budapest is the most beautiful and colourful time to visit. The city starts to return to normal after the long hot summer with the cultural scene starting up. Temperatures are mild and September often provides an Indian Summer.
