The village of Verfeil Sur Seye is situated in the département of Tarn et Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées, between the famous mediaeval towns of St Antonin Noble-Val and Villefranche de Rouergue.
The bastide of Verfeil Sur Seye was founded in the 13th century by Alphonse de Poitiers, the count of Toulouse. From 1250 to 1271 twenty-five bastides were built in the Midi Pyrénées, including Villefranche de Rouergue and Cordes-sur-Ciel.
The sleepy calm today belies the turbulent past of a village that has in its time fallen into the hands of the English, been besieged for its protestant sympathies and been all but destroyed by canon in 1573. In spite of this there is still evidence of its historic past: from the mediaeval arches and halle in the centre of the village to the remains of the original bastide fortifications - upon which it is thought that La Grange Galloise itself was built.
Today the village has a shop with boulangerie/pâtisserie, garage, library, post office, tennis court and the popular Rendez-Vous bar/restaurant.
You need to be aware of French opening times: the shop is shut all day Monday and from 12:00 – 14:00 every day. This is not unusual - even some large supermarkets do this! There is another shop, however, in the neighbouring village of Varen, which opens on a Monday.
