Isere

Isere is located in the Rhone-Alpes region and is surrounded by the departments Ain, Hautes-Alpes, Drôme, Rhône and Savoie covering an area of around 7,440 km2 with 1,064,800 inhabitants.

Isere is a multi-faceted region with a host of surprises in store, reaching from Oisans to Vercors, from Belledonne to Chartreuse, to south Isere with its plains and hills, passing through the city of Grenoble.

Isere is one of the most diverse departments in France thanks to its geographic position with some of the highest peaks in French Alpes but also with plains, forests and lakes. The Rhone valley is very rich both culturally and historically speaking is a diverse patchwork of landscapes with a wonderful natural heritage. It is also one of the oldest wine growing regions in France producing some fantastic full bodied red wines.

The capital of the department is Grenoble with great transport links and now also serviced by budget airlines Ryan air. To the north of Isere lie the mountains of the Grande Chartreuse, to the east the range of Belledonne, and to the south those of Taillefer and the Moucherotte. Isere has an incredibly rich landscape from alluvial forests to high altitude meadows and eternal snow fields at the peaks of the mountains.
