The archaeological site of Bibracte, located on the plateau of Mont-Beuvray, 27 km far from Autun, was given the title of historic monument of national interest in 1985 (a year after the excavations were resumed). Discovered in the 19th century by the archaeologists J.-G. Bulliot and J. Déchelette, this site of 135 ha is indeed the only oppidum (a fortified city) in Gaul where the excavations have been sufficiently extended to give an idea of what a Gallic fortified city looked like in the first century B.C.
