Chantonnay is the county town and serves the villages of Saint Mars des Près, Puybéliard and Saint Philibert du Pont Charrault. The Lake of Touchegray – Moulin Neuf, dominates the tourist activities with its beach, fishing (angling), pedestrian footpaths, games for children, picnic tables, bar restaurant, hotel and a holiday village with individual holiday cottages. In the centre of town: the park Clemenceau is surrounded by railings that provides a haven of peace. The church of Chantonnay has a XV century belltower. The church of Puybéliard; the secret wall doors of Manoir de Ponsay; the round pigeon loft of Dinchin are some of the remarkable heritage to be discovered whilst walking. All types of shops can be found (hypermarkets and individual shops easily accessible in the centre of town). Chantonnay supports the development of sports events such as 4 days trekking in and around Chantonnay, Green Vendée VTT and in 2006 Chantonnay welcomed the National Cycling Championship from 22 to 25 June. Cultural activities : Festival Tales and Music ‘Eperluette’ in November; Music Festival and firework on 13 of July, are just some of the attractions during the summer in the Park Clemenceau.
The Vendée Bocage
To the north of the Vendée department is a hilly landscape of fields and pastures, enclosed by banks bearing hedges or rows of trees. This mosaic of cultivation and grassland, punctuated by coloured hedges separating hamlets and isolated farms, underlines the rural character of a countryside that is organised around small towns. From upper to lower Bocage, the course of the river Sèvre Nantaise is lined with chateaux, medieval fortresses, mills and natural parks. This a land of religion, the land of the 18th-century Vendée Wars, a land of wonderment, with meandering roads between villages and ancient houses. Rambling pathways weave through a wilderness that is preserved for the pleasure of walkers who are hungry for a breath of fresh air.
The flat farming country is a vast cereal-producing expanse of fields that stretch as far as the eye can see and in which any vertical intrusion seems to leap up into view. This is a land that has retained its own true character. From Luçon, an old episcopal seat where Richelieu once lived, to Fontenay-le-Comte, a Renaissance town that was formerly the capital of the Bas-Poitou, the visitor can discover the traditional old farmsteads built of limestone and with gently sloping roofs of pantiles known locally as «tiges de botte».
The Vendée throws open its protected natural sites. Between rocky escarpments and beaches of divinely fine sand which stretch out before the eye to the harmonious accompaniment of the waves, come and discover the delights of the 250 kms of coastline in the Vendée!
A wind laden with history blows along the green and leafy paths of the Bocage countryside, veiling in mystery its chateaux and their thousand reminders of the past.
The charms of the Vendée oscillate between the magical and whimsical colours of its plains and those of its forests.
