The town of Veliko Tarnovo and its surroundings are well-known with the numerous remarkable historic places, as Veliko Turnovo is the third capital of Bulgaria. The town is located on several hills, the most famous of which are Tzarevetz, Trapezitza and Sveta gora.

On the Tzarevetz hill was the king's palace taking area of 5000 square meters. On this hill is also the Patriarchate - "the mother of all Bulgarian churches". The historic church "St. 40 martyrs" is located in the foot of the hill. In its yard were burried many Bulgarian kings.

On the nearest hill - Trapezitza, lived the boyars - Bulgarian medieval aristocrats in homes-strongholds. The number of the churches on this hill used to be almost the same as this of the boyars' homes.

On the hill Sveta gora was the literary school of Turnovo, that exerted a powerful civilising impact on the orthodox world. It was a symbol of cultural progress during XIII - XIV century. Many talented men of literature and art were educated there.
