Nikopolis ad Istrum – north of Velchevo, this is an undisturbed Roman city, established by the Emperor Trajan to celebrate his victory over the Dacians (in Romania) in the early 2nd century. After Pompeii and Herculaneum, it is regarded as the most complete, undisturbed Roman town in Europe.

Veliko Tarnovo – north of Velchevo, this town was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th-14th centuries) during Bulgaria’s “golden age”. Sights include the massive Tsarevets Fortress, the old town, various interesting museums and a number of old churches (particularly in the old town and the Assenova area along the river below the fortress). Just north of the town lies the Preobrazenski Monastery, set high on the cliff side, it contains rich paintings that are currently being restored and you can see the restoration work in progress.

Kilifarevski Monastery – west of Velchevo, this Monastery was established in the 14th century and became a major centre for literature. However, it was destroyed on a number of occasions, before the current building was erected by renowned Bulgarian architect Kolyu Fitcheto in 1840. The wood-carving and icon painting was done by leading artisans from Tryavna.

Kapinovski Monastery – east of Velchevo, this Monastery was established in the 13th century. The Monastery was rebuilt several times, most recently in 1835. There are beautiful murals on the outside of the church depicting the judgement of God. There is also a “secret” chapel hidden beneath the cupola in the main Monastery (not the church) with stunning wall paintings.
