South Stradbroke island

South Stradbroke Island is an Australian island in the state of Queensland, south of Brisbane and forms the northern end of Gold Coast. The 22 km by 2.5 km sized island is the smaller one of the two Stradbroke Islands and lies very close to the mainland. South Stradbroke is one of Australia's rare and unique sand islands. Undeveloped, and with an unspoilt beauty, it boasts a vigorous diversity of flora and fauna, some of which, like the Golden Wallaby (pictured below) are found nowhere else in the world.

From the air, the resort is almost undetectable as it nestles into the natural environment. It has been designed to blend harmoniously with it's surroundings and give it's guests an affinity with the delicate balance of the island. Twenty seconds walk from the resort are the calm and tranquil Western beaches. Protected by the island from strong currents and ocean waves, the lagoon-like waters are perfect for swimming, fishing, boating, or making use of the many watersports attractions available.

Dawn and dusk on the island are incredibly spectacular. It is one of the few places on the East Coast where you can see the sun rise and set over water. Inspiring wonderment, awe, and even romance, they make a perfect beginning and end to every day spent with us at South Stradbroke Island Resort.

The island lives on tourism, but nothing compared to Australia's largest tourist resort, the nearby Gold Coast. The island has some quiet campsides. The western beaches are known as quiet and lagoon-like and the eastern beaches are known as a surfer paradise.

Couran Cove Resort is located on South Stradbroke Island, as are numerous campsites such as an anchorage for the Southport Yacht Club and Dux Campsite, owned by The Southport School.

South Stradbroke Island Resort otherwise known as Tipplers Resort or SSIR is located on the majestic isle of South Stradbroke. The Resort caters for Basic to Working class people whom only require a get away on an island for a reasonable price, in other words the Resort facilities aren't as impressive as Couran Cove. The Fijian Style Huts are nicely built with the basic furniture and ensuite bathroom. The Resort boasts 3 Pools, Function centre, water sports motorised and non-motorised, sea plane, bush walks, tennis, bush golf and sand tobogganing. SSIR also is famous for Tipplers Tavern and Mangroves restaurant where on Friday, Saturday nights and Long weekends is a buzz with many people coming over from the mainland and their own yachts to party to 2am in the morning. The Resort is in the middle of nowhere so Telecommunications, Waste, Water and Electricity are limited in connectivity to the Main land, all of SSIR resources are produced onsite with diesel tanks to produce electricity, chlorinated salt water to freshwater system for the bathroom and Bore water for the gardens, phone calls are made via Microwave link but not all things are bad the Television and radio reception on the island is top notch often receiving channels as far as Brisbane and Tweed heads including the Gold coast channels. SSIR is a beautiful destination to stay with friends and family one day at SSIR and you don't want to leave as the atmosphere is a welcoming friendly atmosphere with friendly people and hospitality that makes you feel at ease.

South Stradbroke Island is a sand island which remains fairly undeveloped. Once joined to its near neighbour, North Stradbroke Island, the islands were split apart in the 1890s when a storm forced a channel between the two.

South Stradbroke Island is the smaller island, some 22 km long and about 2.5 km wide at its widest point. It is accessible via a ferry which departs from Runaway Bay marina, about 9 km north of Surfers Paradise, or by water taxi.

South Stradbroke Island offers a rather different style of Gold Coast holiday. Here there are no high-rise buildings, no all-night nightlife. Instead there is just an opportunity to relax amongst the natural and undeveloped beauty of the bush. In fact, many visitors come to the island to escape from the stresses of a traditional Gold Coast holiday!

Covered by tropical bushland, the island offers the contrast between the calm, protected waters of the western beaches, and the sand dunes and surf of the eastern beaches. The waters off the western side of the island are ideal for swimming and watersports. The beaches on the eastern side are great for surfing. There are many bushwalks on the island, taking in secluded beaches, ocean views and abundant forest.

The island is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Golden Wallaby, which is not found anywhere else. South Stradbroke Island is one of the few places on the east coast where you can watch the sun rise and set over water.
